If asked, one of the hobbies I enjoy most is cooking. Gladly, I can prepare a lot of meals while in the kitchen. But, what to cook is determined by the source of heat I am using. For instance, I would lie if I told you I used my paraffin stove to roast meat. Here, I need kitchen appliances like an oven or an air fryer

The Major Difference between Roasting, Baking, and Air Frying

When you ask a person who does not know the difference between the three, they will tell you there is no difference between them. In fact, most people will claim they mean subjecting the item to dry heat. But this is not the case.  Let’s dive into the significant differences between roasting, baking, and air frying.  Stay tuned.

Roasting, baking, and air fryers are cooking methods that use heat for cooking food. Nevertheless, their differences come in how they are done.  Roasting can be done in an air fryer or oven using dry heat.

On the other hand, baking is done in an oven or air fryer with moist heat. When it comes to air frying, this can only be conducted in an air fryer appliance, where hot air is used for cooking food.

To help you understand better their differences, based on their work, let us have a clear definition of their cooking methods.

Roasting

This method of cooking uses dry heat and hot air to circulate the food in a way that cooks evenly. When roasting, food is placed on a wire rack in an oven that has already been preheated at a high temperature. You can use the method to produce flavorful and tender fruits, vegetables, and meats.

Gladly, you can roast food using several ways that, include: in an oven, over an open flame, or in a heat source like a stovetop roaster.

Because roasting requires high temperatures, the food surface caramelizes and turns brown. The enhanced flavor makes a lot of people love roasted food.  When roasting, you have to be cautious. The high temperature can cause your food to burn. To avoid this, make sure your roasting time is less.

Baking:

This cooking method involves cooking food in an oven, on a grill, and stovetop.  When baking, you require dough used for various culinary purposes, from pastries to bread, to biscuits, pies, and cakes, alongside other recipes.

Baking uses dry heat. As opposed to roasting, baking does not use direct flame exposure. While baking, you place the food in an enclosed space, such as an oven. However, you can use other methods like microwave, stovetop, or toaster oven. When baking, your food is surrounded by hot air. The advantage of this is that your food cooks evenly.

Air frying:

As I told you, the air fryer uses hot air when cooking food. A lot of people consider it as little, or no oil is used in the process. After heating the air, the air fryer appliance circulates the air around the food, allowing it to cook fast.

Instead of the traditional oven roasting, people prefer to use an air fryer.  Happily, they have a compact design and use little oil. This allows the cooking method to be faster than roasting in an oven. Furthermore, they do not produce much heat like an oven. Therefore, it is an excellent cooking method in a small kitchen.

The main difference between this cooking method and the other two is that you will not need to submerge your food in oil. Therefore, you can cook it without any oil. If you are looking for the healthiest cooking option, air frying is the way.

Other differences between Baking, roasting and air frying are as follows:

  • Cooking time difference

Roasting in an air fryer takes less time than in a traditional oven. For example, in an oven, a conventional pot roast takes 25 minutes per pound at 350 degrees Fahrenheit oven temperature. You must set your air fryer at 390 degrees for 15 minutes when cooking a small roast. The baking time in an air fryer is reduced by 20%.

  • Temperature differences

Roasting requires higher heat than you need when baking or air frying.  If you use an air fryer to roast, set it to about 360 degrees Fahrenheit. For the sake of roasting meat, increase the temperature to 400 degrees.

When baking, if the actual temperature of the recipe reads 425 degrees, you should lower it to 400 degrees. If the original recipe requires you to use 325 degrees, reduce it to 300 degrees for air frying.

  • Type of food differences

Some of the foods you can roast in an air fryer appliance include vegetables and meats. When roasting, ensure it is done perfectly to avoid experiencing food-borne diseases from eating undercooked food. Goods you can bake include bread, veggies, meat, and many more. With air fry, consider things you can deep fry in oil. But make sure they are the ones you can reheat or crisp up.

  • Beneficial differences

Another difference between roasting, baking, and air frying comes from the benefits you obtain from the cooking methods. It is faster to roast in an air fryer than in an oven. The same benefit is experienced when you bake in an air fryer than in an oven. When you air fry, you end up with crispy and crunchy food void of submerging your food in grease.

From the above differences, it is essential to know which one among them is the best. Take a keen look at them to see what suits your needs. Cheers!

Air frying is the best cooking method I can recommend if you wish to settle on the healthiest one. Unlike the conventional deep-frying method, this one does not use much oil. When air frying, air circulates the food evenly. Meaning you don’t have to turn it over while cooking. The best choice is roasting or baking if you want deep-fried foods with traditional flavors.

What Is The Roast Setting On The Air Fryer?

It is normal to think an air fryer is only useful for air frying. This is mainly when you try everything possible to have this kitchen gadget last longer.  Luckily, an air fryer does not need only fry. It can bake and roast.  Looking forward to roasting with our air fryer? What is the roasting setting on the air fryer could be a question that is ringing in your mind. I am here to help you out.

As I indicated above, an air fryer bakes roast and air fries. But, there is a temperature difference between them. Hence, you have to set the right temperature to ensure it does not burn or undercook what you are roasting.

Generally, higher temperatures are required when roasting food in an air fryer.  At this point, you will need to set your air fryer at 360 degrees Fahrenheit for your food to roast perfectly. If you are roasting a whole chicken or large pieces of meat, the temperature can be set at 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

When To Use The Bake Setting In Air Fryer?

Earlier, I told you an air fryer bakes, air fries, and bakes. It is upon you to choose what you prefer. Even though this appliance bakes, know that it does it differently from the conventional oven. Here, I will tell you when to use the bake setting in the air fryer.

The baking setting in an air fryer can be used to bake foods like cookies, cakes, cinnamon rolls, baked potatoes, and more. Gladly, the appliance bakes faster than in an oven because of its compact space alongside concentrated heat circulation.

While baking in an air fryer, you will be required to reduce the time and temperature you use in an oven.

To help you understand how to use an air fryer and the bake setting, I will outline some of the helpful steps for baking in an air fryer. Please follow them to the end.

1. Clean your air fryer

You cannot begin baking with your air fryer without cleaning it. Somebody might have fried something and left it unclean. Therefore, you cannot rush to use it because you will end up with poor outcomes. Before use, clean your air fryer thoroughly. If you experience a terrible smell, blow vinegar through it for almost 5 minutes to escape the smell. Also, before baking, make sure the vinegar’s smell dissipates.

2. Choose the right size of bakeware.

There are many types of cookware for use in air fryers. They help contain the foods you are preparing in the pans. However, they are smaller to fit in the air fryer basket and allow even air circulation.

3. Adjust the air fryer’s temperature

Most air fryers have their temperature start at 400 degrees. But you cannot use this for baking. Adjust it to 350 degrees. If you wish to bake at a high temperature, minimize it to 375 degrees.

4. Adjust the baking times for faster cooking

An air fryer bakes faster than an oven. If your batches are small, the time changes. For instance, you can bake cookies in 5 minutes, unlike in a regular oven, which takes 10-15 minutes. The secret to baking in an air fryer is to reduce your oven baking time by 20%.

Happy Baking!
