Trivets vary in size, typically ranging from 4 to 12 inches (10 to 30 cm) in diameter or length, to accommodate different cookware sizes. Sizes include small (4-6 inches), medium (6-8 inches), and large (8-12 inches), suitable for teapots, pans, and extensive dishes, respectively.

 How To Make A Trivet?

Let us have a look at how to make a Trivet!

MaterialsDescription/Procedure
WoodHardwoods are the best because they are durable and long-lasting. Size for length, width, and thickness should be more extensive than that of the material to use as the base of your Trivet.
TileEnsure the size can fit your pots, pans, and dishes to protect the surfaces (tables, counters) from damage. Please make it a shape of your choice, round or square, using a tile saw.
GlueEnsure the glue is waterproof to prevent the effect of water when washing and cleaning it. The glue should not be toxic to ensure that food is safe because the Trivet, at times, can serve as a cutting board. Choose strong enough glue to enable the Trivet for more extended service and look good.
OvercoatEnsure that the oil you use as an overcoat can resist scratches always to keep the Trivet looking beautiful. Make a good choice of overcoat by considering durability; get that which suits your type of wood.
Tools
CalliperThe calliper will help get the correct measurements and sizes of the wood and tile as you cut them. Ensure that it is functional to avoid errors and be accurate.
SawUse a power miter saw to make cuts as you mold tile and wood at specific angles. The saw can also help trim the edges that might be off-round or square.
ClampThe clamp will help to hold the wood and tile in place as you do the cutting and shaping.
RouterUse a rabbet bit or saw to create a cavity to ensure the tile has somewhere to rest.
FileThe file will be of great help for filing to make the tile and wood smooth. Once smooth, applying the overcoat will be much easier.
SandpaperUse the sandpaper of grit that you desire, depending on the workload, to remove any layer of wood or tile to make it smoother as you prepare for finishing and painting.
RoutingBy use of a caliper, measure tile thickness. Set the router’s depth to be the same as the thickness of the tile by use of a rabbet bit. When routing the board, remember to have more length at the ends if, in any case, the router flips off and allows for chopping when moulding.
Tile CuttingUse a caliper to measure the sides of the tile to know which side is longer than the others before cutting them. Use a power miter to cut and ensure that all four sides of the tile are straight at right angles of 90 degrees and are equal. Cut the wood using a power miter, ensuring its angle is 45 degrees. Ensure that the rabett’s position is facing the inside to make it easier to hold the tile tightly.
FittingAfter fitting the joints using the clamp, glue them together. Confirm there are no gaps between the tile and joints before you remove the clamp. Allow the Trivet dry. In case there may be any gaps, fill them with glue.
Finish And UseAfter using the overcoat and grits of your choice, buff your Trivet to look shiny and appealing. When glossy, it also prevents the Trivet from scratches. Your Trivet is now ready for use. You can use it for décor, gifts, friends, etc.

A high Trivet separates the food from water and prevents it from being soggy. Below is a description of one of the Trivets; it also gives us information on how high trivets should be:

MaterialApplicationHeightDescription
SteelUse as a steaming rack. Use as a pot/dish stand rack. Can serve as a rack for cooling.  One can range between 3” and 7”/8” Others can range between 1” to 5”/8”  The steel material is stainless and does not rust. The design is triangular to have a stable base. It resists heat, and the dishwasher is safe with it. Cleaning is easy and does not keep Odors. Desirable for instant and pressure cookers. Give it out as a housewarming gift for friends and family members. Welding spot of joints makes the Trivet durable. Hanging it on the wall makes storage easier and saves space in the kitchen.

What Is the Best Material For Trivets?

There are different materials to use when making Trivets, such as ceramic, glass, cork, steel, wood, bamboo, silicone, etc. The main factor or benefit of all these materials is their nature to resist heat.

Experts have put it clear that silicone is the best material for Trivets because of the following reasons:

  1. Heat Tolerant: Silicone resists high heat temperatures. After use for long hours, they can get hot but cannot allow heat to cause damage to the surface of the table or counter because they are poor conductors of heat.
  2.  Do Not Stick: Any spills on trivets with silicone material are easy to clean because they do not stick. Staying longer with sauce and food spills; removing them will take less effort.
  3. Flexible: A Trivet made of silicone material serves as a holder. While with other materials, you will require a cloth, with silicone, you save time by holding it as long you are using pots that do not heat up to more than the temperatures (500-600 degrees) that silicone can tolerate.
  4. Safe: Silicone material is very safe; during cooking, safety comes first. Therefore, while getting food out of the pots to the trivets, you cannot harm yourself, and the surfaces cannot suffer any damage.
  5. Grippy: The gummy nature of silicone material gives it another advantage and more use. Opening stuck lids with a silicone Trivet is the most enjoyable thing. Place the Trivet on the cover stuck on the pot with your hand, then twist, and the cap will come out without much struggle.
  6. Not Easily Broken: Silicone Trivet is strong/durable and can neither break easily nor destroy. Because of durability, it reduces the cost of purchasing new Trivets now and again.
