- Non-stick cookware spray
- Fine 600 grit sanding paper
- Mild dish soap and warm water
- A soft towel
The Procedure:
- Clean and Sand the Basket Surface: Clean the grease, food bits, and gunk and wash well with mild soap and warm water. After drying, sand the inside of the basket with fine sandpaper to get rid of any peeling and non-stick coating. A soft cloth can help to remove any excess bits from the sanding.
- Apply the New Coating: Pick a non-stick cookware spray or a food-safe heat-resistant spray paint. Make sure it’s safe for surfaces that touch food. Spray thin even layers keeping the can 8-12 inches from the basket. Wait a few minutes between layers to let each one dry.
- Set the Coating: After the last coat, let the basket air dry for at least a day. Some sprays need heat to set Check the product instructions. If needed, bake the basket in the oven at a low heat (around 300°F) for about 30 minutes to set the coating.
How Do You Make a Metal Air Fryer Basket Look Like New Again?
Being an avid air fryer user, your air fryer basket might show signs of use such as scratches, food buildup, and dullness. If you’ve been using your air fryer regularly, it’s natural for the basket to lose its luster. However, with proper cleaning and recoating, you can make it look almost as good as new. Here’s how you do it:
Things you need:
- Surface Spray or Oil
- Sanding paper of 600 grits
- Mild soap and warm water
- Microfiber towel
The Procedure:
- Give the Basket a Good Cleaning: You need to clean off all food bits, oil, and gunk from the basket before you put on a new coat. Gently scrub the surface with mild soap and warm water mix.
Don’t use rough sponges or steel wool as they can make any damage worse. If you have tough grease spots, let the basket soak in soapy water for 15-20 minutes to help loosen the grime.
- Sand Down the Surface: Use fine sandpaper (about 600 grit) to smooth out any rough spots and get the surface ready to hold the new coating. Be careful not to harm the metal underneath. Be gentle with it and start slowly. With time, the rough spots will smoothen out.
- Use a Food-Safe Spray: Look for a spray that can tolerate high heats and is food-grade, like one based on silicone or Teflon made for kitchen tools. Spray it on the clean sanded surface. Let it dry for at least a day before you use the air fryer again. It helps by adding an extra layer of protection that extends the lifespan of your air fryer.
- Season the Basket: Seasoning is the method of developing a natural non-stick surface with the help of heat. You can do it by putting on the new coat, oiling the basket lightly and heating it in the air fryer for about 10 minutes at 350°F to “season” the new surface. This helps create a natural non-stick layer and makes the new coating last longer.
And there you go! You have an air fryer basket that looks good as new! This will help make your device last longer.
